Schools out for Summer – Alice Cooper
Some of you might remember this iconic line from Alice Cooper, and June is here! There is another line in the song; ‘Schools out ‘til Fall, we might not go back at all!’ - sounds like retirement to me. This month also has the first day of Summer and Juneteenth (June 19th), a Federal Holiday meaning the stock market is closed.
What is going on in the markets? More roller coaster activity; however, just to keep perspective, the S&P 500 is up 10.64% year to date as of 5/31/2024 and 26.26% over the last 12 months as of 5/31/2024. There is plenty in the news to keep thinks rocky. Donald Trump, candidate for President, was found guilty on 34 felony counts- first time for that. Sentencing is on July 11, right in between the debates which should make things really interesting. The Fed continues its lion tamer act over inflation using interest rates to moderate the beast. The rest of the world shows wars in Israel and Ukraine. What is interesting to me is the discussion over how we should or should not ’support’ various factions.
Summer time= vacation time, but should your budget take a vacation? You’re on the open road and there are sites to see and souvenirs calling your wallet. You cook all year and now you are on vacation with so many NEW restaurants to try. Care free is not cost free. A planner like me dreams that you set aside money for the trip, hotels, gas, restaurants and even some mad money, but Nani is not a planner! There are some steps to take to help out.
Breakfast in the room, not room service, but some fruit or instant oatmeal can help out with the budget. Or book hotels that serve breakfast.
Think before buying ALL the souvenirs. (What happened to last year’s souvenirs?) Pictures create great and lasting memories. And now you can easily create memory books with these pictures!
Look for deals while you are planning. Travel packages and preplanning can make the trip more exciting and may save a few dollars.
Whatever you do, stay safe and have a wonderful summer.
