Welcome to March

March 04, 2024

Welcome to March and what a month!

March 5 – Election Day in California and a number of other states

March 10 – Day Light Savings begins

March 15 -The Ides of March - Did you know that according to Wikipedia, March 15 was a deadline for settling debt on the Roman calendar?  Also the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar - Es Tu Brute?

March 17 – St Patrick’s Day Celebrating the arrival of Christianity to Ireland and the day EVERYONE plays at being Irish

March 31 – Easter Day – An unusual year when Easter occurs in March.

April 1-5 – Chal and Nani out of office for Tovae’s wedding (and out of pocket)

We’re having a pretty good year in the markets with the S&P 500 up 6.84% year to date.  In my opinion the year will continue with the ups and downs given politics and the world situation (Ukraine and Israel).  We can hope for cooler heads to prevail, but then what would the newspapers have to write about?

I am sure you are in the midst of working on your income taxes, since we are getting a fair share of calls about 1099 forms.  Those, for the most part are available through Advice Works and if you aren’t yet connected, give Lidia Gaspar, Director of First Impressions, a call and we will get you invited.  Notice, I said; ’for the most part’ as some are not complete. Many companies have until March 15 to complete their reporting, so it depends on the holdings in your portfolios.

Gold.  As I commute, I hear several ads for gold which is currently at 2084 - about flat for the year.  The radio ads are talking about owning gold as a metal or coin.  I’ve often wondered if I walked into my local grocery store with a handful of gold coins, what value would I get? Or what would the fast food counter person say?  There are other ways to ‘own’ gold.  For example, some of our portfolios hold GLD (SPDR Gold Share) - a fund which tries to track the same performance as gold bullion.  There are also precious metal funds which may hold other metals like copper or silver as well as other companies in the mining business.  And there are the coins which are referenced in the radio ads.  If you have gold or silver coins or any valuable coins, I highly recommend storing them in a safe as they can easily ‘wander off’  (I spoke with one client who kept them on top of his desk as he liked the look of them).  Bottom line; investment should be easy to value and use for your needs.

Have a great month! And I hope your month “goes out like a lamb”.
